Global importance of the AMO is underlined by the recent Berkeley Earth Project:

We find that the strongest cross-correlation of the decadal fluctuations in ( global ) land surface temperature is not with ENSO but with the AMO.

Put in the most simplistic terms: the AMO is a delayed response to the driver of the semi-permanent low atmospheric pressure system over Iceland (measured at Reykjavik / Stykkisholmur) as graphically shown here:
